Non-Utah Indies We Dig: “Above The Water” by Nathan Houde

Reminds me of star studded Payson nights driving my Jeep through the valley.

With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

I’m just a Utah girl who’s a sucker for hick hop. And while Nathan Houde’s “Above The Water” definitely leans more hip hop than country, the guitar, banjo, and slide work during the opening minute were enough to remind me of star studded Payson nights driving my Jeep through the valley.

Past the 1 minute mark, though, the drop hits and the trap influence begins. Nathan Houde’s voice is reminiscent of Machine Gun Kelly, blackbear, and The Chainsmokers. You know, 2020’s chill bro who likely misses the h*ck out of Warped Tour. And I Stan that.

Overall: great mix, excellent beat, I love the hook and the lyrics. I’m glad this song made its way to the Mountain West from New England. The internet is a lovely thing.
