Really, really well put together.

With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

Today’s pick is a heartfelt fusion of rustic folk and gospel. “This I Know” comes from singer/songwriter John Lippard’s 2018 album The Wake. It tells the story of Lippard’s 15 year struggle with drug addiction and alcoholism.

“I was trapped in the depths of addiction’s grip, I wandered in darkness, lost and alone. Alcohol and drugs had become my masters, controlling every aspect of my existence,” says Lippard. “But amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerged. My faith that I had as a child reemerged. I returned to the only safe place I had ever experienced as a child – I returned to God. This song reflects my recovery journey to finding hope.”

Lippard has the voice of the working class everyman. Fans of Lou Reed will definitely appreciate it. This is also a really clean mix, and the backing vocals are INSANE. It also features great organ work (which I’m a sucker for), and a seasoned guitar solo at the two minute mark. It’s really, really well put together.
