Wish Granted Records is a Provo, UT based record label that handles copyright and PRO registration, physical and digital distribution, radio promotion, sync licensing, social media profiles, studio production, and booking for local musicians. Since their official launch in April, the company has been responsible for the production and release of “The List” by Michael Barrow, As It Is by Belle Jewel (read our review of the EP here), and the song “We Back” by T.Fitz. We got to speak to Wish Granted Records founder Grant Fry about the label’s origins and his plans for the future.
What was the inspiration behind Wish Granted Records? Have you always wanted to start a record label?
Talented singers and musicians have always surrounded me. I’ve seen many of them give up their dream before even really trying. So I started thinking, what can I do about this? How can I help these people have a fighting chance at a stable income while living out their dream? After some time, it came to me. I could start a label and invest some time and money into these artists’ careers. This would give them the time and resources to take a chance and really go for gold.
When did you first get the vision for it?
I got the vision in my first semester of college. I happened upon a book about starting a record label, and started skimming it. With that in the back of my mind, I started doodling in a class and the theme of making wishes come true kept coming back to me. So between those two things, the vision started shaping itself.
So, what does the name Wish Granted represent?
It stands for our mission of making artists’ dreams and wishes a reality. And it has a subtle reference to my name. [Laughter]
I knew it, I knew it! [Laughter] What does music mean to you on a personal level?
I believe that music really has the power to change people individually and as a society. We hope that by empowering our artists they’ll make people feel good and inspire change for the better. I try to not focus on a certain genre or style when looking for artists. They obviously have to be wicked talented and ready to work hard, but I focus a lot more on whether they can put their heart into their performance. Is it real, is it believable? If they have that, we can help with the rest. We want artists who can make a difference.
Where is Wish Granted Records located?
It is right here in Provo. I have an office in my house that we work out of for the time being, until things get moving enough to warrant separate office space. But a lot of our work ends up happening out and about at venues and studios.
Tell me a little bit about the artists on the label.
We currently have Michael Barrow, Belle Jewel, T.Fitz, and Kindred Dead. Each of them has a pretty different style one from another and we are working on deals with a couple other artists that will be in different genres as well. I love what happens when artists cross genres to co-write songs. It gets them out of their comfort zone and they can see into each others’ lives a little better. That fusion creates something so unique and almost otherworldly. And the listeners mirror that effect. It brings them together, past any obstacles of race, culture, etc. It creates a common ground on a human level.
What have you accomplished so far that you’re most proud of?
The beginning has been a slower progression than I would have liked but things are definitely moving! We’ve got a single out from Michael, a couple originals from Belle, and have booked shows galore – including a couple radio appearances – and recently released “We Back” by T.Fitz. That one just passed 6,000 streams on Spotify. The next two months are looking very promising as well. We have a ton of new music coming soon and a really great YouTube series in the works.
What do you think makes the Provo music scene unique?
I think the most unique thing is the variety and amount of raw talent here. There are SO many incredible musicians in just about every genre. You can go to any random show in town and see a band or artist that is killer. You don’t find that in a lot of places. If you just go to a random show in most towns you have good chance of it being awful. But here, that rarely happens. Provo’s got so much potential, and I’m excited to see where Wish Granted Records can take it.
