FAQ

General

Who is Provo Music Magazine?

We’re just a group of people passionate about local music, good writing, and supporting creative people! You can find out more about our team and goals on our About page.

How can I contact Provo Music Magazine?

The best way to reach us is by emailing provomusicmagazine@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can also find us on Instagram @provomusicmag.

Is Provo Music Magazine run by the Provo city government?

Nope! We have no association with city officials. We share a common goal of loving this city and wanting to share what’s special about it, but we do not receive any direction nor grants/tax breaks from them.

Coverage

Does Provo Music Magazine cover ____?

Provo Music Magazine, despite what the name might suggest, covers all things music in all places Mountain West. Our primary focus is on Utah music, especially the scenes in Provo, Orem, and the rest of Utah County, but that’s by no means a hard limit!

In terms of genre, while folk, rock, indie, and pop make up a large part of our coverage, we welcome everything from opera to EDM. If it’s Utah music, it’s got a home here.

How can I get my music reviewed by Provo Music Magazine?

If you’re interested in having us review your music, feel free to send it over either via email or on Instagram. We’ll add you to our review database for one of our writers to pick up. Please note: We only review albums and EPs, not singles. There are so many talented Utah artists releasing music every week, and as much as we’d love to, our team just simply doesn’t have the bandwidth to give each new single the attention it would deserve.

Please be aware that sending a release in for review does not mean you are guaranteed to have a review come out soon (or ever). All of our reviews are done at-will, meaning our writers cover what they want to and are generally not assigned specific things to review. We’d rather people write about what they enjoy listening to than forcing them to review something that isn’t their style or taste. It’s unfortunate some releases don’t get covered for a while, but doing it this way means each review can be as authentic and impassioned as possible. It’s better for the writers, better for the musicians, and better for the readers.

If I send in my music early, will Provo Music Magazine review it before it’s released?

Maybe! So long as we have a staff member who is interested and available to review it. We love helping get audiences excited for new music, but the above limitations and stipulations still apply. You are more than welcome to send it over, but with our team being relatively limited in size and time, just sending it does not guarantee you a preview.

If you are interested in pre-release review, please be sure to send your music to us at least one month before the release date so we have time to get it written, scheduled, etc.

Does Provo Music Magazine review live shows?

Generally speaking, we don’t do show recaps except for special events like Battle of the Bands. We recommend checking out Utah Concert Review for that type of coverage.

If you’re interested in having a show included in our Shows This Week posts, please contact us with the details of the event at least one week prior to the date of the show.

Getting involved

I want to work/write for Provo Music Magazine! How can I do that?

We appreciate the interest! We don’t have any full or part-time positions available at the moment, but we are always looking for talented writers to join our (paid) freelance team. Please send over an email including your interest, background with music or journalism, and a writing sample or other relevant work. We’ll be in touch from there!

How do I get involved in the Provo/Utah music scene in general?

Lucky for you, there are always other people asking the exact same question! We can’t build a band for you, but we can give you ideas on where to meet people as well as a lot of other tips for other steps along the way. Our biggest piece of advice is to just jump right in; start going to shows, meet people with common interests, and be nice to everyone you meet along the way. Chances are you’ll find your crowd in no time.
