From Isolation to Community: Provo Pianist Savannah Jones

This BYU student turns her small practice room into a global concert hall.

Savannah Jones is a grad student at BYU studying piano. And while she’s certainly good enough to perform in concert halls across the nation, she’s making a name for herself online.

What initially began in 2019 as a way to stay sane and connect with others in the lonely, isolated practice rooms on BYU campus has now become her creative resume. Consisting of beautiful concertos and sonatas, she regularly broadcasts her performances to over 53,000 followers.

Jones also shares educational content to help other aspiring classical musicians. Videos cover a variety of topics, including tips on piano posture, what a day looks like for the average music student, and jokes about Nerds Gummy Clusters โ€“ her favorite snack to eat while practicing.

She made a huge difference in the lives of musicians struggling with injury when she opened up about her own struggles. She injured her right hand in 2022 and spent months in recovery. For a time she learned and performed left-hand-only pieces.

While her account has amassed enough fans to plant her squarely in “influencer” territory, she doesn’t think of herself that way. “I’m a pianist first,” she says. “I hope that people are inspired to either practice more or pick up an instrument or go listen to a classical piece that theyโ€™ve never heard of or go to a symphony.”

Make sure to follow Savannah Jones on Instagram. BYU recently released a video about Savannah’s story. You can watch it below.
