Earlier this week, our editor, Zach Collier, sat down with NPR’s Raina Douris to discuss Provo Music Magazine and the distinct “Dusty Deseret” sound on WXPN/Philadelphia‘s World Cafe.

In the interview, Collier discussed how Provo Music Magazine began and how it helps the Provo music scene continue to grow. According to Collier, this publication started almost out of necessity. It was hard to find out what bands were doing around the area. He took it upon himself to begin to compile information for the scene.

Later in the interview, Collier discussed some songs that fit the Dusty Deseret genre and what makes it unique to Provo. Collier explained that Dusty Deseret is “a really unique take on folk rock, with interesting textures and lyrical themes that are very regionally distinct.” The first song he shared was “Wildflower” by the National Parks, which he called the “quintessential Dusty Deseret song.”

The next song he shared was “Bones” by RIP Cassette, which he called “a perfect example of regional distinction.” He explained how the lyrics in this song describe distinct markers like ward prayers, baptisms, and references to Idaho, which can only be understood by those who have experienced Latter-day Saint culture as a BYU or BYU-I student.

Another song he shared was “West Hills” by the Killers. This song also has regional distinction because it comes from a record all about Nephi, Utah. Collier explained how Dusty Deseret is not religious music, although it makes reference to religious things. This song is a perfect example of that because it’s about someone trying to break free from organized religion to find solace in the west hills of Utah.

Now the world knows a little bit more about what music our town has to offer thanks to this interview. You can follow Zach and World Cafe on Instagram. Check out the full episode below!
