In a modern musical landscape rife with overproduction, this record hearkens back to simpler sonic times.

With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

With clean lead guitar over dusty, crunchy rhythm guitar reminiscent of the late ’60s and early ’70s (see Norman Greenbaum, The Raspberries), the Nashville-based band Wishpenny gently subverts genre expectations by slowing down tempos and adding soulful, gravelly female lead vocals.

The tracks on their 2023 album day after dark are straightforward and understated. In a modern musical landscape rife with overproduction, this record feels like a time capsule full of unheard sonic gems, hearkening back to simpler times with tracks like “better than we found,” the breezy “believe,” and the gorgeous title track, “day after dark.”

Fans of the Provo act Roadie will find lots to love on day after dark. Wishpenny shares a similar affinity for well crafted horn lines over vintage rock n roll sounds.
