With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

If you want to see who’s making cool music at the Y – no, not BYU, but Yale – look no further than Diana Omar. She’s a self-described sentimentalist in chaos studying by day and making bangin’ indie pop by night. Her latest single, “without a doubt,” opens with a furiously fuzzy bass line coupled with haunting vocals that make excellent use of sonic space.

The vocals are present and upfront in the mix, but instead of being completely dry, there is ample space cast far behind Diana to set the stage for a pretty epic beat drop 28 seconds in. Her approach to music feels like a more modern and haunting version of the approach that vintage Provo artist LYLOH took in the ’10s with her songs “Here” and “Sleep Easy.” It’s really cool. I’ve missed female-fronted indie pop like this.
