Spooky and immensely cinematic.

With so much music in the Provo music scene, itโ€™s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. Itโ€™s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

“Oh My” by Hunter James and The Titanic is literally everything I love in a song rolled into one. The atmosphere on this track is palpable, opening with what sounds like a distorted mellotron and some spooky synth bass before dropping into a really rustic, gothic folk sound with rich organ and bright guitar. It’s immensely cinematic.

Hunter James’ vocals are heavily effected, with a plate reverb and short delay pattern giving a slight psychedelic edge to his warm, gritty tone. His voice is reminiscent of Strand of Oaks, but more twangy and anthemic. The chorus soars, adding a touch of down-home country gospel vocals that really elevate the entire experience.

The drums are also notable: the engineering is solid, and the performance shows a remarkable amount of restraint โ€“ particularly in the fill at 3:30. This song is absolutely solid. It’s so cool.
