With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

The Magnificent Dying is a fascinating project out of Pioneertown, California. Don’t know what Pioneertown is? We got you. It’s an 1880s-themed town developed specifically for shooting Westerns. It’s in San Bernardino County, with a winding 4-mile scenic drive into town. With this backdrop in mind, it’s no wonder The Magnificent Dying sounds the way they do. They say their music is for “savages, outlaws, cowboys, and blacklisted drinkers,” which is a fitting description.

Writer and frontman Julian T Pinder carries himself with the old timey swagger befitting a gunslinging western saloon singer. On today’s feature, “The War,” producer Chris Unck of High Lonesome Studios employed really great vintage recording techniques and retro tones on the vocals, harmonies, organ sounds, and guitars. It’s so distinct and feels at once incredibly analog and incredibly Western. We’re huge fans.
