With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.
This is probably one of the freshest picks we’ve come across as of late. “Keep Calling” opens with sparkly, shimmery synths and tight, punchy, straight ahead drums. Most listeners would expect a modern retro-bedroom-pop track of sorts. Instead, Tom Webber’s voice enters – a gravelly, granular, down home texture you’d expect on a folk rock track (there’s even a nod to this in the acoustic-arpeggiated bridge).
The juxtaposition between the vocals and the instrumental is marvelous, and it works. Especially when the chorus drops and the track opens up into the chillest of anthems. The vocal production on this song is absurdly well executed. It makes you realize the only thing better than one Tom Webber is an army of them, stacked and tripled in heavenly unison.
The guitars are subdued, well played, and smartly effected, never overshadowing the synths – the primary instrumental melodic driver of the track. Honestly, this is everything you could ask for from a breakout indie hit.
