With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

Not going to lie, when the guitar first came in mixed the way it was, and Elizabeth Cuite started singing “Woman in the Window,” I immediately assumed this was going to be a lo-fi demo from some small-town girl who wasn’t quite there yet with her songwriting and production. But what a bait and switch!

Elizabeth turns into someone else vocally at 0:33 and the production follows suit, with a spacious electric guitar that immediately elevates everything. It’s among the most magical things I’ve heard as of late, and it was a very pleasant surprise.

Elizabeth Cuite is currently a student at a BFA conservatory program in New York. It feels like she’s got some musical theatre experience, because she plays the song’s main character so well. Her voice blossoms and matures as she recounts the story of a girl dying to leave her home town.

This song is a slow burn, but I really enjoyed how she leaned into process and duration.
