This track has a melancholy, bittersweet core. Sure, it’s much more sweet than bitter, but it communicates deep feeling underneath all the fun.

With so much music in the Provo music scene, itโ€™s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. Itโ€™s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

Today’s Non-Utah Indies pick comes from Idaho by way of Nashville. An Idaho native, 19-year-old indie pop artist Tessa Dalton is no stranger to the Intermountain West. We’re huge, huge fans of her voice and her production on this track. “Overkill” has a really cool sparse synth line in the first verse. It’s dancy without feeling hokey or overly peppy. She’s really dialed in the tones.

That first chorus hits so good. It’s going to please fans of Taylor Swift and Dasie in equal measure. The layers build and intensify as the song progresses, with some masterful arranging in the second verse where whispers enter on the phrase “Whisper I’m yours.”

This track has a melancholy, bittersweet core. Sure, it’s much more sweet than bitter, but it communicates deep feeling underneath all the fun nonetheless. Tessa Dalton is an artist to watch.
