Legendary composer and conductor John Williams has stepped forward in support of preserving Abravanel Hall, home of the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City. Williams is best known for composing the iconic film scores for Star Wars, Jaws, Home Alone, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and more.
The acclaimed composer penned a heartfelt letter emphasizing the hall’s significance as a cultural gem. He praised its elegant design and superb acoustics, labeling it a “crown jewel” that Salt Lake City should preserve for future generations to enjoy.
The fate of Abravanel Hall has been uncertain as ongoing discussions of a revitalization zone that includes the hall, the Salt Palace Convention Center, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art have routinely placed them in jeapardy. While city leaders and Smith Entertainment Group (helmed by Qualtrics founder Ryan Smith) have proposed redevelopment plans for the area, concerns over the hall’s potential demolition have sparked public outcry and prompted over 45,000 signatures on an online petition urging preservation.
Williams, who conducted his own composition at Abravanel Hall for the 2002 Winter Olympics, highlighted his personal ties to the venue and his admiration for its namesake, Maurice Abravanel. His letter, dated July 10, emphasized the role of such cultural institutions in connecting communities and preserving musical heritage. Members of the Utah Symphony, including concertmaster Madeline Adkins, expressed gratitude for Williams’ endorsement, noting his profound impact on both music and the hall itself.
Salt Lake County officials have wrestled with various proposals, including rebuilding Abravanel Hall elsewhere, amid estimated costs for renovation or reconstruction. Williams’ intervention adds substantial weight to the preservation campaign, emphasizing the hall’s irreplaceable role in the city’s cultural landscape.
