Here at Provo Music Magazine, we are (obviously, I hope) fans of all things local music. We’ve put our time in at venues like The Boardwalk and Velour Live Music Gallery listening to all manner of talented folk, indie, alt, rock, and acoustic acts. But Provo, Utah, and Mountain West music are more than folk, indie, and rock music. That’s why we make sure to cover stuff like classical and jazz too. We’d cover more, but unfortunately genres like EDM and hip-hop just don’t have a Utah scene …or do they?

Personally, I am a huge fan of electronic music. Most of my teenage years were spent listening to the likes of deadmau5 and Monstercat, and I was so disappointed to find that this college town had no clubs or raves when I moved here for school. I was convinced there just wasn’t a scene—that despite the multiple colleges and tens of thousands of young people within biking distance, the closest I’d get to an electronic scene without going to Vegas was Afuego Fridays. Even if you’re super into local music, you probably think the same.

But we are both (thankfully) wrong because it’s here, and it’s good.

Over the course of this week, Provo Music Magazine is going to dive into the very real and very fun Utah electronic scene. It might not be as visible as the indie or rock crowd, but it absolutely exists, and it deserves so much more attention.

First, our weekly album review tomorrow will dive into local producer Netsylph‘s album Year of Wood Dragon. Then, Wednesday brings an interview with the guys running Lost & Found, a collective putting on shows with local DJs and producers, and the story behind their formation and efforts. Thursday will feature a showcase of ten of our favorite producers from Utah worth knowing (as well as a slew of honorable mentions). Finally, Friday will close out the week with an interview with one of the biggest electronic projects in Utah: Mr. Tape.
