With so much music in the Provo music scene, itโ€™s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. Itโ€™s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

Here are five songs from indie artists across the country. Hopefully something here can help spark some new inspiration for you.

Effy Harvard โ€“ โ€œHer Bootsโ€

Effy Harvard of Spring, Texas is channeling a unique kind of nostalgia with her take on 1960s American country music. Her voice strikes the perfect balance of twang and purity, exuding a genteel quality that contrasts with the subtly fierce undertones of her songs. From the rich instrumentation to her dreamy photography and overall aesthetic, Effy nails the vibe effortlessly.

Her narrative-driven lyrics are filled with sharp turns of phrase, paying homage to the storytelling tradition of classic country. Even if country music isnโ€™t your go-to genre, Effy Harvard is sure to earn your respect for the craft.

Comfort Club – “Fear Of Moving On”

Comfort Club is a name that perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the music they make. Their track, โ€œFear Of Moving Onโ€ (a clever nod to the FOMO acronym) is pure comfort music. It evokes the laid-back spirit of 2000s coffeeshop artists like Howie Day, Matt Nathanson, and early Jason Mrazโ€”before he got lost in all the weed.

But Comfort Club isnโ€™t just recycling those familiar tropes. At its core, this is a classic singer/songwriter tune, yet the production gives it a fresh twist. The vocals are treated with a modern touch, and the drum beats have that unmistakable 2020s bedroom pop feel, all while retaining the rich, organic instrumentation that defines those iconic artists.

Chloรฉ Temtchine โ€“ โ€œYou Already Knowโ€

Chloรฉ Temtchine’s voice is so smooth, you’d never guess it’s powered by borrowed breath. Her latest indie pop track is both functional and slick, but the story behind it is what truly elevates its impact. Temtchine penned this heartfelt tribute to the individual who gifted her their lungs through a double-lung transplantโ€”literally breathing new life into her. โ€œIt’s a profound gesture of gratitude and love to the person who became my silent hero,โ€ she shares.

Now, Temtchine is gearing up for a nationwide U.S. tour, aiming to uplift children and adults facing medical challenges. She plans to visit over 24 hospitals, performing in lobbies for patients and staff alike. โ€œOur goal is to bring hope to those in need and raise awareness about Pulmonary Hypertension, while transforming this tour into a powerful organ donation awareness campaign,โ€ Temtchine says. โ€œItโ€™s crucial to be an organ donor; one donor can save eight lives and significantly change the lives of many more.โ€

Becca Tremmel – “Average Joe”

If you’re yearning for the days when Taylor Swift blended youthful exuberance with country twang, look no further than Becca Tremmel. This feisty pop-country artist isn’t afraid to throw some punches, and her latest track, โ€œAverage Joe,โ€ serves as a fierce takedown of a harsh critic. It’s the anthem you need to crank up in the face of rejectionโ€”equal parts petty and playful, packed with infectious hooks that will stick with you.

Tremmel’s vocal quality and delivery are nothing short of immaculate, expertly weaving harmonies around her voice. The drums add a super verb-y texture that gives the song a bold, in-your-face vibe, while the standout mandolin features elevate the track even further. โ€œAverage Joeโ€ is a cut above the rest.

Andrew Batcheler – “Falling Together”

Congratulations: youโ€™ve stumbled upon the most elusive indie artist around. Andrew Batcheler is frustratingly obscureโ€”when asked for press photos, he offered none. A quick Google search reveals little, and his YouTube channel features just one auto-generated visualizer (likely from CD Baby, his digital distributor). Meanwhile, his Instagram is filled with shots of him behind the camera, leaving us to wonder if heโ€™s shy or simply a mysterious alter ego. Either way, the music speaks for itself, and this intriguing lack of an online persona only adds to the allure.

His latest track is the epitome of folk-pop. Itโ€™s feel-good and organic, yet produced with anthemic flair that makes you want to dance. I particularly loved how he created space in the second verse, giving listeners a breather after the energetic first chorus. The use of snaps and claps adds a fresh twist, keeping things engaging. This track is a perfect late-summer anthem, ideal for those late September nights by the fire with friends. Don’t miss out!
