It’s no secret that the Provo music scene is both incredibly talented and criminally underfunded. Over the years, my own projects have had to try a variety of methods in order to get quality recordings. If you’ve learned how to record on your own in your bedroom (with middling results); donated plasma; picked up a second job; saved for months to afford a few hours in a quality studio; taken out credit cards at terrible interest rates; or started, I dunno, a Provo-themed music magazine in order to cover production costs, you’re not alone.

One of the most difficult, time consuming, and expensive things to get right on a song is drum production. Most musicians in Provo live in apartments, so finding a place to even practice drums (let alone record them) is a challenge. Then there’s mic placement, room treatment, and the quality of the kit itself to consider. If you decide go to a professional, sound-treated studio, you’ll likely also have to pay an hour for drum setup on top of the time it takes you to record.

The Solution

That’s where we come in. Provo Music Magazine has teamed up once again with the legends at June Audio to help streamline music production in the Provo music scene and beyond. This new initiative is called Drums Only.

One night a week, we’ll set up one of June’s many many drum kits in Studio 2 at June Audio. You won’t have to pay for setup costs or worry about lugging your own kit in for recording. All you have to do is send us a tempo-locked scratch track, schedule an hour, show up, and lay down your takes. Then our engineers will comp the drums and send the tracks to you.

From there, you can choose to come back to June Audio and finish the rest of the song, or take the professionally recorded drum tracks and record the rest at home or at another studio that suits your needs.

It’s only $75. You can do one track or come back every week to record multiple songs on different kits to keep each one sounding subtly unique and fresh. And you’ll never, ever have to pay for setup time.

What if you don’t have a drummer? If you’ve got an extra $25, we have a session drummer on hand. For $100, you’ll not only get professionally recorded drums, but you’ll also get Reed Perkins. He currently drums for Local Kin, Mac Wright, Michael Barrow & the Tourists, Chi Chi Le Mรถt, Ben Reneer, and has opened for Hunter Hayes, Melt, Little Big Town, Sub-Radio, The National Parks, and more. He’s recorded on hundreds of songs in the Provo music scene and will be able to arrange your song with ease.

Interested? We’re now accepting bands for our first night of Drums Only. RSVP here and we’ll reach out to you. Check out Studio 2’s specs below!
