With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.

Here are five songs from indie artists across the country. Hopefully something here can help spark some new inspiration for you.

Caged Affair – “Paradise Again”

This track is a powerhouse from start to finish. The drum production is nothing short of epic, paired with guitars that balance beauty and heaviness. The vocal delivery perfectly matches the song’s intensity, while the production ties everything together. One standout moment comes at 1:46 when the stacked vocals kick in—it’s a beautifully executed payoff after an engaging buildup. This song takes listeners on a rewarding journey, and it feels like the band has truly found their sound with this one.

Ani Mari- “burnout”

This track is a masterclass in modern folk production, seamlessly blending fresh, contemporary elements with a brassy, midwestern vocal style. The vocal performance exudes authenticity and power, perfectly aligning with the song’s dynamic energy.

The chorus is a true highlight, bringing an exhilarating peak that stays with you. The lead guitar subtly weaves in and out of the left speaker, adding depth and creating a textured, engaging listening experience.

Tiana Green – “Still Young”

Tiana’s song boasts a fantastic hook and a standout vocal performance. A noteworthy element is the e-drum sounds, particularly around 0:58, which carry a distinctly mid-2000s vibe. While this adds a nostalgic charm for some, it’s an era-specific texture that could come across as dated to others. For us, it’s a definite positive, adding character and personality to an already impressive piece. It gives us throwback vibes for sure, and we’re all about it.

Mister Motivation – “Murphy’s Law”

This track is a shining example of excellent production and engineering, with every element thoughtfully balanced to create a polished and immersive sound. The standout female vocal is a highlight, adding both depth and charm to the arrangement. Her performance is emotive and engaging, perfectly complementing the overall tone of the song. We loved the intricate details in the mix, from the vocal layering to the crisp instrumentation.

What truly sets this track apart is the artist’s effortlessly casual and carefree flow. There’s an approachable, old skool authenticity to the delivery that makes the song feel personal and relatable.

Highway Natives – “Wait ‘Til It Breaks”

This song is a masterpiece. I will die on that hill.

The piece evokes a profound, melancholic beauty that feels like a deep, blue country evening. I loved everything: the haunting fiddle, the soulful upright piano, the heartfelt vocal performance, the restrained yet impactful drums, and that stunning guitar solo. It all comes together in a way that hits straight to the core.
