Whysound, a longstanding venue in the Logan music scene, recently announced via social media their indefinite closure as well the postponement of the annual festival Whyfest. The decision comes in the wake of several allegations of sexual assault against the management team from members of the music community.
Whysound opened its doors in 2008 and has seen changes in appearance, ownership, and even services over the years, with the space also serving as a recording studio and record store during its time as part of the Logan music community. The venue has been praised for serving as a place where all are welcome, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, or beliefs. However, there are many who feel the current management has tainted the reputation of the long-running venue in recent years and that it is no longer the safe space it once was.
After the band Hartebeest announced their decision to withdraw from the venue’s annual Whyfest, citing allegations of misconduct by owners, several other bands and individuals came forward with additional concerns and stories, with many deciding to drop out of the festival as well. A petition for change of leadership was also organized and to date has over 300 signatures from bands and community members.
In response to the outcry, Whysound announced April 3, 2025 via social media that the venue would be cancelling all announced shows and indefinitely postponing the 2025 edition of Whyfest to turn their attention to the issues. Management promised they “want transparency for everyone involved in the music scene and Logan community” and “we ultimately want accountability and truth.” The venue also has also begun work with CAPSA to support victims of sexual assault and have opened an anonymous comment form for members of the community to voice concerns.
Resources are available for victims of sexual assault at the CAPSA website as well as the RAIIN and NSVRC websites or at the hotlines 435-753-2500 (for CAPSA) and 800-656-4673 (for RAIIN).
