How Musicians Feel About The Local Scene

Some of you might remember us sending out a voluntary response survey a few months ago. The survey was aimed at getting a pulse on local musicians’ feelings towards the local scene with very open ended questions like, “What’s the hardest part about being a musician?” Even with these open ended questions, there were some very prominent trends.

Keep in mind this is a rough analysis done with a rough survey and shouldn’t be considered hard fact. It really is just intended to get a general feel for how musicians feel in the Provo. Overall, musicians in the area seem to feel that there’s a lot of friendly and talented people. They just wish there were more places to play.

Remember, this was a free response survey, so it’s pretty impressive that over 50% of responses talked about how good the music is without a leading question prompting that specific answer. This doesn’t mean 50% of responses think the music’s bad, rather it means that over 50% went out of their way to point out how good it is. It’s also interesting to see that about 1 in 4 people brought up the lack of venues, wishing there were more places to play. To Velour’s credit (the quintessential Provo music venue), they’ve curated a very professional location that has been a critical piece in helping local musicians succeed while many other venues have unfortunately just come and gone.
