Sage Lane. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because this band played at the Battle of the Bands Finals at the Boardwalk last May. Sage Lane formed shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared a global health emergency. While many people were confused and panicked during the summer of 2020, brothers Jared and Evan Berger jammed in their grandparents’ basement.
There, they recorded their first cover and kicked off their new band. Later adding members Logan Nicholson and Cale Jensen, Sage Lane drew inspiration from alternative and indie rock artists. Describing their style, Sage Lane says: “If Hippo Campus and the Backseat Lovers had a baby, it would be Sage Lane.”
This statement is evident in Sage Lane’s recently released debut album, VAGABOND. The album effortlessly blends elements of indie rock and alternative music to create a sparkling and refreshing atmospheric vibe that immediately draws listeners in. An infectious groove drives the songs forward. Like sipping cold lemonade on a hot day, VAGABOND feels refreshing.

If you want to feel like the main character in an indie film, give “Penny Board” a listen. Picture riding your penny board along the coast or through the woods, wind in your hair. That’s how the song feels. It’s like remembering a past version of yourself. With introspective lyrics and a locked-in cadence, the song ends with this reflective line: “I’m just proud I’m not so timid anymore.”
“Broken Sticks” is another great track, different from the rest of the album’s songs. Edgier. The influence of the Black Keys and Death Cab for Cutie is tangible in the raw and retro feel of this track. “Don’t let someone ruin your life. Ruin it yourself. Put your phone down, live your life.” I would love to hear more songs like this in Sage Lane’s future, experimenting with different song structure and sounds. The drums in this track are perfect.
Listening to this album repeatedly, I can say that VAGABOND’s music will resonate with you like the vibrations of the road beneath your board’s wheels. Sage Lane is a local band to keep your eye on. They’ll continue doing big things with their captivating storytelling and intricate layering of bass, drums, guitar, and vocals.
