Step into the Angelus Theatre in downtown Spanish Fork, and the ambiance of the space immediately inspires wonder. The high ceiling, the long hall, the carved angel overlooking the proceedings. I can’t think of a better place for a Christmas Eve music service. And that’s exactly what’s happening at 4 PM and 11 PM on December 24, 2023.

Twice today, Utah Valley Church will present its Christmas Eve Candlelight Services. Musicians from the Utah Valley Church will present modern arrangements of traditional sacred Christmas carols interspersed with scripture readings that tell the story of Christ’s birth.

“The scripture readings will be a poignant journey through the heart of the Christmas story,” Utah Valley Church said in a press release. The service is open to everyone in the community, regardless of religious affiliation. “Whether youโ€™re a member of our congregation or a visitor seeking a serene and meaningful celebration, we extend a warm welcome to you. May the grace of Christmas fill your hearts with peace and joy.”

I had the privilege of attending last year’s service with my family. One of my favorite moments came at the end, after several participatory musical numbers. The lights were dimmed and every member of the audience lit a candle for a quiet moment of reflection. The candles were meant to represent a shared faith community and the warm, joyous light of Christmas. It was really special. This event is a unique musical tradition for the Provo music scene that more people should know about.

Whether you’re looking for something to do on your own or with your family, both the 4 PM and 11 PM services are open to everyone and are free of charge. The Angelus Theatre is located at 165 N Main in Spanish Fork, Utah.
