With so much music in the Provo music scene, it’s easy to get sucked in and start listening to music in a bubble. It’s always great to see what awaits you in the broader world of sonic textures, and to find new recommendations that can inspire you to make music differently than you did before.
Today’s Non-Utah Indies pick is “The Family Tree” by Nashville-based songwriter Casey Frazier. At this point we’re kind of turning into a Casey Frazier fan club. He’s right up there with Josh Rouse as one of the most criminally underrated songwriters of all time.
This track has a bit of a latin flair. Far from a genre piece, however, it never departs from a really authentic American desperado sound. The brushed snare, the twangy electric guitar, and the harmonica work all cement this as a uniquely American piece.
Above the phenomenal arrangement sits Frazier’s beautiful, drawl-inflected voice. Whether he’s crooning or harmonizing, his delivery is consistently magical. It’s approachable, warm, and sad all at once. Seriously, more people need to experience it.
