Singer, songwriter, and music educator Taylor Miranda recently published her first book, The Songwriting Breakdown. With her extensive music experience—a degree in commercial music and writing from Brigham Young University, six EPs of original music, and time in local band TREN—Miranda brings unique insights to her readers. In The Songwriting Breakdown, Miranda shares what she knows with the music community.

The book is a toolbox for readers wanting to write original music, whether new or experienced at songwriting. In the book, Miranda cleverly explains songwriting concepts by pairing them with relatable analogies like the “dramatic roommate” and “meet cutes” alongside popular music examples and exercises to allow readers to apply what they’re learning in real time. “My goal is to make the process of making songs one that is both manageable and connects with you personally,” Miranda says.

James Knight, former popular music director at HBHS and songwriter and bass player for Sparkle Jets U.K. praises Miranda for breaking down song form and mechanics while also including plenty of sources and inspiration. Knight says, “There are chapter recaps and quizzes, worksheets, exercises, and sources for lyric ideas, melodies & chord structures. She even includes practical advice for working with others, relatable and fun explanations, and great graphics.”

Miranda sees the book as a resource for songwriters wanting to contribute to the music industry, especially the local one. “The music scene in Provo will continue to elevate as songwriters and musicians continue to pursue the craft at the highest level,” she notes.
